Font, St Michael's, Alnwick (1)

I designed this new font for the Grade II* listed church using curves derived from the 'perpendicular' style of the windows. Carving and polishing the Kilkenny blue/black limestone by hand was laborious. The raised plinth around the font is bordered with the same Kilkenny limestone, framing the York sandstone that was also used to make a harmonious baptistry of the newly refurbished west end of the nave.

A bowl is hollowed from the top of the table and drains to a soakaway beneath the floor, calling for some very accurate drilling. I made a plug from the same stone, setting it into stainless steel, which was ground to make a watertight fit.
