Most of our contemporary letter styles are descended from the Roman, exemplified by the inscription on Trajans column. I carved this formal design into a bench, using the Trajan style in monogrammatic devices to celebrate a shared wedding anniversary.

For larger work I use Adobe Illustrator to design letter forms or set out suitable fonts to fit the space and jointing, and a plotter/cutter to make stencils. Setting out this poem for Miller Homes’ new estate at The Meadows, Framwellgate Moor, Co Durham, I worked closely with poet Carolyn Jess-Cooke to adjust line breaks to preserve the meaning.
