The conical hammer is called a ‘dummy’ – no idea why - this only weighs a couple of pounds. The tools are set out in rough order of use – the pitcher for knocking large chunks off, the point for ‘roughing out’, the claw tool for hatching the stone very close to the finished surface, and small chisels for the final shaping. Grandpa Tom also made me the callipers and stamped my name on them with his invented trademark of MITLEY.

Since then I have come by a wide range of traditional tools - many are superseded by new technologies but I treasure these links with the craftsmen who refined the technique of carving over many centuries.
