Pediment sculpture (1)
Pediment sculpture (1)

In mythology the phoenix rises from its own ashes, symbolising rebirth and renewal. This deep relief carving (seen still in progress) is part of a large pediment sculpture, 5m wide x 2m high, comprising motifs chosen by the client woven into a complex design to suit the architectural style of this new home.

The work is seen here on a large scaffolding easel during carving. Jointing was carefully planned to avoid delicate parts of the work. The stone suppliers provided dimensionally accurate stone which allowed the joints to be kept very tight - after installation they are virtually invisible.
